  • Before/After School Age Child Care

    Responsible for teaching Progressive Swim programs. Must ensure the safety of all students enrolled in classes while making learning experience enjoyable and fun for all the participants. Required to maintain the physical demands of the position and possess strong interpersonal skills to maintain a trusting relationship with children, parents, staff, and community and be able to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with YMCA standards.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Certified as a Swim Instructor with the Red Cross or the YMCA.
    • Must have prior experience with children in a similar teaching setting.
    • Must be able to teach classes of up to 8 swimmers.
    • Must be able to teach different swim strokes and water acclimation for ages three through adults.
    • Must learn the curriculum for all swim levels.

    The Senior VP/COO will provide strategic direction and executive level leadership to our diverse, multi-Branch operations.  The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges Association encompasses six Branch locations (and associated satellite sites) serving a diverse array of urban, suburban, and rural communities spanning several New Jersey counties. Supported by a combined budget of over $33 million, our 200 full-time and 700+ part-time/seasonal staff collectively serves 181,000 members and program participants annually.  We offer a wide variety of programs including swimming, aquatic exercise, wellness, fitness, nutrition, youth and adult sports, child care, school aged child care, day and resident camp, dance, and theatre.  Our range of programming includes activities for the active older adult and those with special needs, as well as specialized family activities and community service programs. 

    Reporting to the President/CEO, the Senior VP/Chief Operations Officer is responsible for ensuring successful operations and continued growth of the Y through program expansion, new programmatic strategic initiatives, membership cultivation and engagement, expanded community partnerships and collaborations, and development of staff and volunteer talent.  As the senior executive for Branch operations, the Senior VP/COO directly supervises six Branch Executives, ensuring sound fiscal management and excellence in programmatic performance through utilization of comprehensive business analytics.  As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Senior VP/COO supports the CEO in fulfilling overall strategic and operational responsibilities, providing leadership in the strategic planning process and the implementation of new strategic initiatives. We seek a candidate with a proven record of success in leading multi-branch operations and a demonstrated commitment to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility initiatives. 

    Essential Functions:

    • Provides overall leadership and direction to Branch Executives and other key members of the extended leadership team, ensuring strategic goals and objectives are aligned across Branch operations and seamlessly executed in support of the mission.
    • Develops a high-performing team of executives, directors and managers who are empowered and accountable to make thoughtful and sound decisions in executing the operational plan of work.
    • Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of robust, integrated business and operational strategies which support the organization’s overarching strategic plan.
    • Develops and directs high quality relationship-based membership engagement strategies. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
    • Provides leadership in establishing priorities, launching new initiatives, aligning resources, adapting systems and structures, and championing change in Branch functions and infrastructure to support the changing needs and priorities of members.
    • Leverages internal and external partnerships to ensure quality experiences.
    • Works collaboratively with other members of the leadership team to conceptualize and grow the Y’s income generating strategies and philanthropic base to help diversify and strengthen the organization’s financial resources.     • Initiates and cultivates relationships with potential new business and community partners.
    • Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, innovative pricing strategies, new site development, and strategic partnerships and collaborations.
    • Provides leadership in the development of a comprehensive budget plan; meets or exceeds budget targets. Exercises executive level oversight and control for assigned budget lines; reviews operational budget planning process and budgets for all related cost centers. Monitors monthly financial reports to ensure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.
    • Fosters a member-focused culture across all Branch operations by spearheading a robust evaluation of program outcomes and member satisfaction levels and harnessing learning for continuous quality improvement. Ensures programs are faithful to the Y’s cause and high quality standards.
    • Plans for long term management and optimal utilization of property and facility assets.
    • Provides executive level oversight in the planning and implementation of all new construction, facility acquisition, and major renovation projects. Reviews plans and specifications to ensure programmatic relevancy, adequacy, and financial feasibility. Ensures that properties and facilities meet current operational needs and are maintained in accordance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
    • Provides overarching executive leadership and direction to the Y’s Safety and Risk Management program.

    PT/FT Specialists-(18 yrs and older)

    Camp Specialists are responsible for planning activities around themes for each week of camp already chosen, leading these activities with camper groups, and overseeing other camp staff while in their classes. Applicants must have prior experience in providing excellent customer service for parents, campers and leadership of staff.  We are in need of program leaders that have knowledge of and passion to teach: science, music, art, sports, world life, cooking, drama, games, or create your own and really impress us!  Starting hourly wage rate $12.00.

    Senior Counselors are responsible for supervising Junior Counselors and camper groups, implementing day-to-day activities, assist in the planning of special events and camp activities, leading daily swim lessons, engaging children in activities, and communicating concerns and issues to parents and directors. Applicant must have prior experience in providing excellent customer service for parents, campers, and staff leadership.  Must be willing and able to get into the water to assist in swim lessons daily after being trained by YMCA lifeguard staff.  Starting hourly wage rate $8.50.

    PT/FT Junior Counselors (16-18 yrs - maybe 15 with CIT experience)

    Swim Instructors are responsible for assisting camper groups with swim lessons in the early part of the camp day.  Our YMCA Lifeguards train and assist our staff in leading swim lessons. Applicant must have good customer service skills and be interested in learning how to provide excellent customer service for parents and campers. Applicants must be able to encourage campers to be comfortable in the water and learn how to swim. Our campers are swim-tested and placed into appropriate levels to ensure their progression. Starting hourly wage rate is $5.50 for first time hires that are under age 18, per youth minimum wage compliance.

    After Camp Care Counselor (16 years or older)

    After Camp Counselors are responsible for providing positive leadership for campers and organize activities of campers’ choice in the afternoon hours.  Applicant must have good customer service skills and be interested in learning how to provide excellent customer service for parents and campers. Volunteer or work experience with children preferred.  Starting hourly wage rate is $5.50 for first time hires that are under age 18, per youth minimum wage compliance. For those 18 years or older the starting hourly wage rate is $8.38.

    Become an Environmental Education & Program Instructor.
    Job responsibilities include teaching a variety of outdoor classes in the areas of ecology, natural history, team building and outdoor skills, assisting in evening programs like night hikes and camp fires, and developing new curriculum. A BA/BS is preferred but not required, however a love and wonder of the natural world, and an enthusiasm to work with children are requirements of the successful applicants. Being a team player and flexible in your teaching style is also vital.
    Instructors have the opportunity to work with schools, youth & adult groups & families through our Environmental Education & Conference Programs.
