Aquatics Director

Under the general direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Aquatics Director is responsible and accountable for the overall daily operations of the Aquatics Department. Major areas include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing, implementing, coordinating, and controlling services of the aquatics program; exercising independent judgment and decision-making authority as delegated; managing budget, staff, policies and procedures. The Aquatic Director is required to operate the aquatics program in compliance with YMCA best practices. Responsibilities include the overall management of the swim instruction and lifeguard programs as well as the operation, facilitating, planning and coordinating of related events and programs.

 

Assistant Teacher

  • Assist the Teacher with implementing developmentally appropriate and creative activities; assume the Teacher responsibilities when Teacher is absent.

Before/After School Age Child Care

Site Supervisors

Minimum Requirements: Very organized with experience leading staff and working with children in a group setting in Before/After School programs. High school diploma required, college credits/degree preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with parents and school staff is essential.  

Group Leaders and Group Assistants

Minimum Requirement: Ability to lead and/or assist children with positive group activities in a nurturing environment. Candidates will be a positive role model ensuring safety of the children at all times.

Schedule: Monday - Friday

Before Care: some sites 7:15am - 8:30am; some sites 7:30am – 8:45am

After Care: some sites 2:15pm - 6:30pm; some sites 2:30pm – 7:00pm.

Conference Director

Environmental Education/Conference Instructors

Are you interested in teaching children about themselves and the nature that surrounds them? Fairview Lake YMCA Camps is a year-round residential outdoor education program that focuses on hands-on experiential education and outdoor courses for children in grades 2-8. Fairview Lake is located in the Northwest corner of New Jersey surrounded by 660 acres of swamp, forest and fields. We also reside on a mile long lake, our name sake. We are only an hour and a half drive to New York City!

Fairview Lake Environmental Education and Conference Instructors will teach pre-approved academic curriculum for ecologies, facilitate the teambuilding course, and lead campfires and night hikes. Environmental Education classes are a major portion of lessons led, however, some recreational activities like boating, climbing wall and orienteering occur regularly. Everyone will also lend a hand when it comes to projects; a few examples being: fixing equipment, upkeep of cabins and wood-splitting.

 

Family Worker/Floater

The East Orange YMCA is seeking a Family Worker who will be responsible for coordinating services for children and families in compliance with standards set by the school district. A primary responsibility of the Family Worker is to connect the parents and the community with the Early Childhood Program. 

Essential Functions:

  • Establish healthy positive relationships with parents and children, and serve as the liaison between the Early Childhood program and the home.
  • Conduct a minimum of three (3) home visits per month.
  • Provide monthly parent support groups.
  • Organize a Parent Advisory Committee.
  • Maintain regular contact with teachers, parents, and supervisor about children's activities in the program.
  • Share pertinent information with parents, teachers, and supervisor ensuring confidentiality rights of families are maintained.
  • Be knowledgeable about community services and be able to help families make linkages to needed social services.
  • Complete Social Service Assessment to identify needs of program children and their families.
  • Identify needs as expressed by the family; make appropriate referrals, complete necessary paperwork and follow-up for assurance of services
  • Prepare and distribute community resource list.
  • Conduct post referral evaluation.
  • Work with program staff on developing programs that promote healthy child development and increase parental involvement.
  • Establish, coordinate and support parent participation in program's parent committee and parent activities.
  • Help provide information and training to parent volunteers.
  • Participate and attend all scheduled trainings/workshops required for the position.
  • Maintain contact with parents to ensure student attendance is regular.
  • Provide and ensure linkage with emergency assistance and crisis intervention.
  • Work cooperatively with community-based social service agencies to assist families in their own efforts to improve the conditions and quality of family life.
  • Maintain organized records and complete paperwork in a timely fashion.
  • Organize monthly workshops for families.

 

 

Fitness Floor Associate

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have high school diploma.
  • Must be certified and have completed an American Red Cross or YMCA lifeguard certification course successfully including First Aid, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a related field.

 

Swim Instructors:

Responsible for teaching Progressive Swim programs. Must ensure the safety of all students enrolled in classes while making learning experience enjoyable and fun for all the participants. Required to maintain the physical demands of the position and possess strong interpersonal skills to maintain a trusting relationship with children, parents, staff, and community and be able to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with YMCA standards.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certified as a Swim Instructor with the Red Cross or the YMCA.
  • Must have prior experience with children in a similar teaching setting.
  • Must be able to teach classes of up to 8 swimmers.
  • Must be able to teach different swim strokes and water acclimation for ages three through adults.
  • Must learn the curriculum for all swim levels.

The Y’s camp season runs from June 25 - August 24th. All hired staff will need to attend a minimum of 30 hours of pre-camp trainings on some evenings and most Saturdays in June. Higher level camp positions also require pre-camp planning as part of the position requirements.

All open camp positions for the 2018 season are listed below. Many of these positions are available at any of our day camps within our location daily hours ranging from 7am to 7pm for both full and part time positions.

PT ART Specialist-(18 yrs. and older)

Camp ART Specialists are responsible for planning art activities for grade school aged campers, leading these activities with camper groups, and overseeing other camp staff while in their classes. Preferred applicants would have prior experience teaching and leading art camp-type projects with children. Applicant must have prior experience in providing excellent customer service for parents, campers and leadership of staff. 

PT STEM Specialist-(18 yrs. and older)

Camp STEM Specialist is responsible for planning STEM activities for grade school aged campers, leading these activities with camper groups, and overseeing other camp staff while in their classes. Preferred applicants would have prior experience STEM  skills to children.  Applicant must have prior experience in providing excellent customer service for parents, campers and leadership of staff. 

FT Senior Counselors (18 yrs. and older)

Senior Counselors are responsible for supervising Junior Counselors and camper groups, implementing day-to-day activities, assist in the planning of special events and camp activities, leading daily swim lessons, engaging children in activities, and communicating concerns and issues to parents and directors. Applicant must have prior experience in providing excellent customer service for parents, campers, and staff leadership. Must be willing and able to get into the water to assist in swim lessons daily after being trained by YMCA aquatic staff. 

PT/FT Junior Counselors (16-18 yrs. - maybe 15 with CIT experience)

Junior Counselors are responsible for assisting Senior Counselors and Program Specialists to provide positive leadership for campers. Applicant must have good customer service skills and interested in learning how to provide excellent customer service for parents and campers. Volunteer or work experience with children required. Must be willing and able to get into the water to assist in swim lessons daily, after being trained by YMCA aquatic staff. Starting hourly wage rate is $5.50 for first time hires that are under age 18, per youth minimum wage compliance.

PT Swim Instructors (15-17 yrs.)

Swim Instructors are responsible for assisting camper groups with swim lessons in the early part of the camp day. Our YMCA Lifeguards train and assist our staff in leading swim lessons. Applicant must have good customer service skills and be interested in learning how to provide excellent customer service for parents and campers. Applicants must be able to encourage campers to be comfortable in the water and learn how to swim. Our campers are swim-tested and placed into appropriate levels to ensure their progression.

Extended Care Counselor (16 years or older)

After Camp Counselors are responsible for providing positive leadership for campers and organize activities of campers’ choice in the afternoon hours.  Applicant must have good customer service skills and be interested in learning how to provide excellent customer service for parents and campers. Camp Oratam is located 45 minutes from Hackensack in Harriman Park, NY, along Lake Kanawauke. All counselors and campers are bused to camp from our location. The Y’s camp season runs from the end of June  through the end of August. All hired staff will need to attend a minimum of 30 hours of pre-camp trainings on some evenings and most Saturdays in June. Higher level camp positions also require pre-camp planning as part of the position requirements.

All open camp positions for the season are listed below.

Healthcare Administrator

We seek a qualified individual who will provide a safe and nurturing environment for campers and staff. The Healthcare Administrator will be directly responsible for the health and wellness, care and needs of campers and staff around the clock during camp sessions. You will compile and interpret medical forms for all participants, and communicate information to necessary personnel. The Healthcare Administrator will be responsible for the safe dispensing of medications daily and following treatment plans as directed by overseeing physician(s). Provide first aid treatment and determine when additional care is required. Maintain accurate records of all incidents, treatments and medications. Maintain health service supplies, ensure first aid kits and health center is stocked. Implement health care policies and procedures. Keep parents informed about any incident involving their child/ren.  Keep Director informed about all incidents concerning staff members and/or campers. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree, be a registered EMT, LPN or RN. Have all current First Aid/CPR/BLS/NYS certifications.

Waterfront Director (21 yrs. and older)

The experience Waterfront Director will be responsible for supervising and managing all aspects of safety and programs at the camp waterfront, within guidelines of the NYS Health Department, American Camping Association and the Metro YMCA of the Oranges. The Director will also be responsible for assessing each camper's and staff member's swimming ability to determine appropriate swim levels and approved water activities. The right candidate will possess a High School Diploma or equivalent; three (3) years lifeguard experience, open water preferred, current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications, WSI preferred.

Adventure Counselor (21 yrs. and older)

Adventure Counselor will plan, direct, and supervise specialized activities including but not limited to, camping, rock climbing, low ropes challenge course, hiking, nature, and general outdoor skills/activities. S/he will lead, motivate, and provide a safe camp program which fosters children's social, physical, and intellectual growth. Counselors must have the ability to lead activities, be a group leader, and demonstrate flexibility. The right candidates will possess previous experience or extensive knowledge of instructing and leading camping, rock climbing, hiking, fishing and general outdoor activities. Must be safety conscious and energetic, who is able to relate well with campers, staff and parents. Prior experience with youth programming, previous experience in summer camp or YMCA preferred. CPR/AED- Professional rescuer, Wilderness First Aid, and Lifeguard certifications a must or willingness to certify.

Group Counselor (18 yrs. and older)

As a group counselor, you will be responsible for the overall management and leadership of a camp group. The counselor will oversee and be responsible for the safety of a group of campers in daily camp activities. S/He will lead, motivate and provide a safe camp program which fosters children's social, physical and intellectual growth, along with having fun. The ideal candidates will have the ability to lead activities, be a group leader, and demonstrate flexibility when needed. Previous experience working with children in the outdoors. CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard certifications a must or willingness to certify.

Specialty Counselors (18 yrs. and older)

Specialty Counselors are responsible for organizing special programming for our camp, from how to build a campfire to leading day hikes. Your role will be to focus on creative camp programming and scheduling that provides a fun-filled environment and exposes our campers to new ideas and activities. Must have at least two years experience working in camps. Must be able to lead activities, be a group leader, and demonstrate flexibility when needed. Must possess a CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard certification or willing to certify.

Camp Program Director (21 yrs. or older)

As part of the leadership team, the Program Director will assist the Site Director with day-to-day programming and camp special events. The Program Director will be responsible for  developing programs that develop and grow our campers, providing a fun-filled, safe environment, and guiding campers and their counselors through the daily schedule. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service, communication, and mature decision-making abilities. Must have at least three (3) years experience working in camps with the ability to lead activities. Must have CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard certifications or willing to certify.

Teen Program Leader (18 yrs. or older)

The Teen Program Leader will provide leadership and support to our teen campers ages 13- 16, with a minimum of two (2) years experience working with children, preferably teaching experience or background in working with teens. Teen program leaders work closely with camp leadership to lead, motivate, and provide safe programs which foster social, physical and intellectual growth.   Must have the ability to be physically active all day, lead activities, be a group leader, and demonstrate flexibility when needed. Prior experience with youth programming, with previous experience in summer camp or YMCA preferred. Must be CPR/AED-Professional Rescue, Wilderness First Aid, Lifeguarding certifications. Must obtain certifications prior to start of camp.

Lifeguard (18 yrs. or older)

Lifeguards will be responsible for the safety and supervision of the designated swimming area. We seek self-motivated and organized individuals who will also be responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of program delivered and the involvement of all, by providing safe environment for all participants. The ideal candidates will have strong communication skills. Step in and assume other camp duties as needed. Must adhere to New York State Health Department codes and guidelines. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have or be able to obtain current First Aid/CPR and YMCA Lifeguard and Swim Instructor certifications. Must be able to pass lifeguard skills test.

Theater Technical Coordinator

Year-Round Program Instructors

Job responsibilities include teaching a variety of outdoor classes in the areas of ecology, natural history, team building and outdoor skills, assisting in evening programs like night hikes and camp fires, and developing new curriculum. A BA/BS is preferred but not required, however a love and wonder of the natural world, and an enthusiasm to work with children are requirements of the successful applicants.
