Our School-Age Child Care (SACC) Program serves children in all of the Elementary schools for the South Orange/Maplewood School District and follows the School District’s School Calendar. Our programs do not run when the schools close for inclement weather or other school emergencies. Our YMCA does offer a Child Care program called “Vacation Camp” for most of the days that the school district is scheduled to be closed.
Daily activities include: A healthy snack provided by the program, activity time that may include art, crafts, games, dance, outdoor play/organized recreation and a designated quiet time when homework is encouraged. (A Tutor may be available twice weekly to assist those students who request help with their assignments. This is a group tutorial and not intended as one-on-one tutoring).
The Horizon Blue Cross Foundation has sponsored a program called the “Healthy U!”, for all New Jersey YMCA After School Care programs. It's goal is to combat childhood obesity by instituting behavioral changes in children in a multi-pronged approach that includes nutrition education, increased physical activity and a focus on family. The program insures that all after-school child care participants get a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity and that they are offered healthy snack choices each day. The CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) program is also utilized by our Y, which helps to guide children and their families in the development of healthier habits and lifestyles.
