South Mountain YMCA
Questions to ask your Child Care, Pre-School or School-Age Provider:
Do you have identified staff to child ratios?
Do you have specific educational goals and guidelines for activities?
Does your staff meet specific educational qualifications and guidelines?
Do you do criminal background checks on ALL your staff and volunteers?
Do you meet State safety standards?
Are you State Licensed?
The South Mountain YMCA says yes to all of the above.
Our Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young children ages 6 weeks through Pre-School. We provide experiences that enhance and enrich each child's cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical and creative development. Within the center's daily schedule, each child has opportunities to create, to explore the environment, to develop problem solving and personal interaction skills.
Children develop a positive self-concept through a balance of self-directed activities and teacher-assisted activities. Our staff serve as positive role models and provide care that is supportive, nurturing, warm and responsive to each child's needs. Lesson plans and informational letters are shared with parents weekly. This allows parents to become even more involved in their child's classroom experience. We operate under all licensing regulations set forth by New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services. In addition, we implement criteria from National Association for the Education of Young Child as well as guidelines developed by the YMCA of the USA. All sites are state licensed and exceed the state-mandated ratio of teacher to students.
We offer families:
- Flexible schedules and extended hours
- A center that is closed for only 7 days a year
- Better than state required child/teacher ratios
- Indoor and outdoor active space
- Field trips and special center events
- Respect for cultural diversity
- Consistent communication
“It's hard to believe we've been part of the South Mountain YMCA family for 8 1/2 years! Our three children have been educated, comforted, motivated, and supported by almost every teacher and counselor during that time. The loving team at the Y has worked with us as we endured oppressive crunches at work, medical scares, a toddler with a rigid morning routine, opinionated preschoolers, tween angst -- to name just a few of the challenges we've faced together. We've found the structure we've needed to help create a daily rhythm and the flexibility to adjust when life's music skips a beat. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. It truly does take a village, and we hope we'll find a way to be there in your hour of need, as you have been for us.” - - An Early Childhood Learning Center Family
“Our two daughters were at the YMCA child care center from the time they were 6 weeks old to when they were ready for kindergarten. The teachers were so patient, warm and loving and always reinforced the core values of the Y. They also helped through those tough times of potty training- actually the teachers potty trained both girls! We always thought of the teachers as part of our family, and still to this day do. The Y played such a big role in shaping the girls into the great kids that they are today.” - The Salituri Family
”It’s very bittersweet to be saying good-bye to the Y after so many years. My daughter was just 4 months old when we started here, and now she is starting Kindergarten! The teachers have all been so caring and supportive through the years. We will miss you all so very much. Thank you for everything you’ve done for our family.” - South Mountain YMCA Parent
