YMCA of Greater Bergen County

Sleepaway Camp - YMCA Camp Michikamau

The Great Gathering

For 90 years Camp Michikamau has offered a high quality traditional overnight camp for youth and teens. Summer 2019 will be our 90th camp season. Michikamau means "great gathering" and a great gathering is what we truly are.  Every summer, in addition to the majority of our campers that come from Bergen County NJ, we are proud to welcome campers and staff from all corners of the globe.

On the ceiling of our dining hall, we have the flag of every country that we have had an international staff member from and we try to add a new one every year.

A structured program

Our sleepaway camp program provides a balance of structured, cabin group and choice activities. In the first week of a camp session we have a fixed schedule and every camper gets to try out every activity area in camp, along with the YMCA staple of daily swimming lessons of course.  The philosophy behind this is to ensure that each child tries activities that they would not otherwise have chosen to participate in.  The philosophy works, every session we have campers that choose activities in our second week of camp, known as "choice week", that they would otherwise have never chosen to experience in the first place.  In addition to our activity periods, there is one open activity period every day called "leisure time" where campers can choose to go boating, swimming, go to the sports complex, shop at the camp store or just relax and enjoy time with their friends. Each camper receives daily swim lessons taught by qualified swim instructors. Each evening, after dinner, campers enjoy a camp activity such as casino night, dance, scavenger hunt, gold rush, talent show or campfire.

Weekends offer variety in programming. Each weekend has a different theme and the entire camp is involved in activities such as international weekend, survivor weekend and color wars. Sunday mornings are a reflective time for campers where the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are discussed.

Comfortable accommodation

Our wooden cabins house a maximum of ten campers along with two of our counselors.  Campers are assigned cabin groups based on their age.  Our bathrooms all have hot running water, private individual shower stalls and flushing toilets.

Some of the most memorable moments happen on the out-of-camp overnight experience. On one night each session, campers will plan their meal, pack their gear, hike to their destination, build a fire, cook and sleep under the stars.

Our camp family

Camp Michikamau prides itself on hiring staff from around the world in addition to our American staff, most and sometimes all of whom, attended our camp as campers themselves. The diversity of staff enhances the experience for the campers.  We have an exceptionally high return rate for our staff, we often only need to hire one or two new staff members who have never been at Camp Michikamau before.

Each cabin has a well-trained counselor and an assistant counselor who provide a nurturing and safe environment for campers to live and learn. Campers develop independence, self confidence and self reliance along with understanding, respect and responsibility through their experience living with nine other campers of the same age.
