Camp at the Y is a great place for summer fun and adventure! Our dedicated staff return year after year to help campers develop skills in athletics, arts, and swimming, all while having fun, making new friends, and creating lifelong memories.  Age-appropriate divisions within the camp offer enriching, active, creative opportunities for playful learning.  Head counselors are college-age, and a registered nurse is in attendance each day. All campers receive a camp t-shirt.

All of our camps offer traditional, back-to-basics summer camp experiences promoting the Y’s core values of Caring, Respect, Responsibility, and Honesty.

Activities

Depending on camper age, activities include swimming, archery, canoeing, rock climbing, campouts, nature, games, arts and crafts, outdoor skills, and special events.

Our Staff

Our well-trained YMCA camp staff is dedicated to providing your child with an exceptional camp experience.  Summer camp staff are carefully chosen for their enthusiasm, talent, and dedication - many of our counselors are former Kahagon, Oratam and Michikamau campers.  All staff participate in pre-season training to further develop their skills to create an environment where our campers feel cared for, accepted, and encouraged.  Advanced training is provided for staff in rock climbing, challenge course, overnight hikes, lifeguarding, and boating.

All staff are subject to reference and background checks.  Staff members receive first aid training, as well as, instruction on policies and procedures specific to the camp programs prior to the start of camp. Our well-trained, dedicated staff return year after year to help campers develop skills in athletics, art and swimming, all while having fun, making new friends, and creating lifelong memories.

With summer day camp programs for children about to start kindergarten all the way through to their teens, as well as a sleepaway camp for kids entering third grade all the way through to our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program for 16- and 17-year-olds, we truly have something for everyone. Day Camps for Campers of All Ages

If you’re like most parents, you may be a little nervous about your child going away to camp for the first time. While there’s no “one-size-fits-all” age in which every child is ready for summer camp, you can make the adjustment easier on yourself and your son or daughter by exploring the idea of day camp. The YMCA of Greater Bergen County has day camps available to suit all age ranges, including:

Summer Steam Day Camp (Entering Grades 2-4)

Each week we will concoct and construct hands-on experiments and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) projects that delight a child’s sense of wonder.We foster community, promote personal growth and stimulate summer learning with discussions, outdoor play, art projects, gardening, swimming and more! Swim instruction is two days a week at the Greater Bergen County YMCA. Daily outdoor activities and one field trip per session help campers become more aware of STEAM projects right here in New Jersey.

Kahagon Day Camp (Entering Grades K-1) CANCELED

Kahagon Day Camp offers age-appropriate kid’s activities for the youngest of our campers. Your children entering kindergarten or first grade will enjoy arts and crafts, nature activities, and swim lessons with certified lifeguards on duty and a protected swimming area that’s only four feet deep from end-to-end.

Oratam Day Camp (Entering Grades 2-7) CANCELED

Located in Harriman State Park, NY, on beautiful Lake Kanawauke, Oratam Day Camp offers many enriching activities for kids entering grades 2-7, including archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, swimming, color wars, camp talent shows, and optional overnights for nighttime hiking and stargazing.

TeenVenture Day Camp (Grades 8-10) CANCELED

Our TeenVenture campers enjoy rock climbing, all-day hiking, kayaking, a low ropes course, and more while cultivating their leadership and team-building skills, as well as their individual growth. At least once per session, teens can also choose to participate in one of our fun-filled camp overnights.

Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program CANCELED

Our intensive four-week Counselor-in-Training program is aimed at campers entering grades 11-12 who enjoy being outdoors and working with children. Our CITs work closely with camp counselors to hone their leadership and outdoor living skills while building the foundation for future career possibilities.

Sleepaway Camps for Campers of All Ages

The benefits of sleepaway camp are as diverse as our campers themselves. While away at summer camp, your son or daughter will grow in a multitude of ways. Campers develop self-confidence and an awareness of nature and others while spending time in a safe, nurturing atmosphere fostering teamwork, social interaction, and problem-solving skills that will last them a lifetime. The YMCA of Greater Bergen County offers the following sleepaway camp experiences for campers of all ages:

YMCA Camp Michikamau (Grades 3-10) CANCELED

Also referred to as “The Great Gathering,” Camp Michikamau offers a structured sleepaway camp program suitable for campers of all ages. Campers are assigned comfortable cabin accommodations based on their age, although some of the most memorable experiences come from the optional out-of-camp overnight experiences under the stars. Weekends are spent exploring nature and our core values.

Counselor-in-Training Program (Ages 16-17) CANCELED

We also offer our intensive four-week Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program for sleepaway campers entering 11th or 12th grade who are interested in a leadership training program. While the completion of this program does not guarantee a camp staff position, it does open new doors for your teen as they develop their leadership, teaching, and problem-solving skills in a relaxed outdoor environment.

What Sort of Activities Will My Child Participate in at Camp?

Depending on your camper’s specific age group, our YMCA summer camps in Bergen County offer a plethora of activities, including swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, archery, arts and crafts, campouts, nature hikes, games, and special events designed to develop their outdoor skills. All YMCA of Greater Bergen County staff members are dedicated to ensuring your child has an exceptional summer camp experience. We carefully screen and select summer camp staff who are enthusiastic about working with kids. Many of our camp counselors are former campers themselves, so they have a unique understanding of what makes our camps so special. Pre-season training hones their skills in problem-solving, first aid, lifeguarding, boating, and many other relevant subjects. We also subject all staff to extensive background and reference checks for your child’s safety and well-being. Many members of our well-trained staff return year after year to help campers develop skills in athletics, art, and swimming, all while having fun, making new friends, and creating lifelong memories.

How Do I Register My Kids for Your Summer Camps?

The YMCA of Greater Bergen County makes it convenient to register your children for summer camp on our website. Just go to activenet.active.com/metroymcas and create an account. You must have a valid YMCA membership at the time of registration and while your child is attending summer camp to receive our membership rate. Otherwise, the fees will be adjusted to reflect our community member rate. The balance is due at least two weeks before the first day of each camp session. We encourage you to join our monthly payment plan to guarantee your child’s spot and that you’re paid in full before camp starts!

What If I Can’t Afford to Send My Kids to Summer Camp?

The YMCA of Greater Bergen County strives to make attending summer camp as affordable as possible with flexible payment options, including cash, checks, and credit cards. Check out our blog titled “Here Are Four Ways to Make Summer Camp Affordable” for tips on working this rewarding experience into your family’s budget. Some families may qualify for government assistance through the New Jersey Child Care Subsidy Program or the Child Care Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit, which helps working families with lower incomes. The YMCA itself also offers financial assistance made possible through the generous donations of our communities and members.
