With busy schedules, finding the time to exercise isn't always easy. Working out with a personal trainer can help boost your fitness routine and keep you on track to reach your wellness goals.

According to the Journal of Strength and Conditioning, individuals who train with a personal trainer achieve significantly greater fitness improvements than those who don’t. “Working out with a personal trainer is beneficial no matter what your fitness level,” explained Cathy Scutti, the Health and Wellness director at the Wayne YMCA. “Working with a trainer helps people stay motivated and reduces the chances of injury.”

"A personal trainer is a great option for anyone at any fitness level who may want to increase their overall fitness, increase a specific area of fitness, for example increase endurance, strength, flexibility or cardiovascular capacity," said Alma Dhuyvetter, Wellness director at the Sussex County YMCA.

Working with a personal trainer, according to Dhuyvetter, can help you:

  • Gain confidence
  • Learn great form and technique
  • Reach a specific goal
  • Be accountable for regular exercise
  • Try something new

A recent article from LIVESTRONG.COM details the top seven reasons to work out with a personal trainer:

  1. Define your individualized fitness goals
  2. Create a personalized workout
  3. Teach proper form
  4. Motivate and celebrate
  5. Hold you accountable
  6. Provide variety instead of complacency
  7. Efficient use of the session time

Working out with a friend or partner can also provide the accountability (and fun) needed to stick with your exercise plans.  “The Y provides lots of opportunities for members to get to know each other and work out together,” says Scutti, “There is no pressure, and our staff is helpful and knowledgeable.”

Even better, if new members join the Y together, they will each receive 20 percent off their monthly payments for as long as they are both members. New members are also automatically enrolled in the Y’s MyFit VIP program for the first 30 days of membership. They will receive three sessions with a qualified wellness coach who will design a custom workout plan based on their personal goals. The perks of the MyFit program are worth over $400, but as a VIP, new members receive them at no cost.

There has never been a better time to begin a new exercise routine and start reaching your goals. And personal training is an effective way to make that happen.
