5 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Change in Seasons

As the cooler autumn air arrives and we trade T-shirts for sweatshirts, it’s important to keep health in mind during this seasonal transition. The change in temperatures and fewer hours of sunlight that come with the colder months can make it difficult to maintain routines of getting outside and exercising. 

Here are some ways to stay healthy during the change in seasons.

1. Stay active. 

Take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage and go hiking or apple picking, or get outside and rake leaves. Daily exercise is also important for keeping your body and mind healthy and energized. Take a yoga or aerobics class at your local YMCA. To ensure you are staying active even when the time changes, book an exercise class in advance so you’re more inclined to go.

2. Maintain a routine. 

Daylight Savings Time can throw off your schedule and your internal clock. New school activities, chores and events can also interrupt your routine. Going to bed at your normal time and planning out your week is important for your overall health and well-being.

3. Protect yourself from illness.

Getting an annual flu shot is one way to do this. The flu shot also helps prevent the spread of the flu virus. Wash your hands frequently to minimize exposure to germs, and encourage children to do the same. Also, eating well can help ward off sickness. Choose from a variety of in-season fruits and vegetables that have immunity-boosting vitamins and minerals, such as pumpkin, squash, beets, broccoli and kale, and drink plenty of water.

4. Set fitness goals. 

A change in season can also mean a change in lifestyle. If you’ve gotten off track from your goals or just want to create new ones, start small and create attainable goals. Join a YMCA branch and take advantage of exercise equipment, classes or even personal training.

5. Get rest. 

For many of us, that’s easier said than done, but building in time for rest and self-care is important in keeping our bodies healthy and minds sharp. Getting plenty of sleep is essential in preventing sickness as well, as the brain processes immune information while you rest and lets your cells rebuild and regrow. Also, try to go to bed earlier to prepare for the months of decreased sunlight, so you’ll be able to wake up earlier and feel rested.
