While summer may seem far away, it’s never too early to start making plans. Early bird registration for the 2020 season begins mid-December for most summer camps offered through the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges’ seven branches. If your child attended camp last year and can’t stop talking about it, or if they want to try out a new camp, reserving a spot early can help ensure they have a great experience at an affordable price for your family.

Here are 5 benefits from registering early.

1. Secure your spot

Many camps fill up quickly, so registering early can help you to get the weeks you want, especially if you’re registering multiple children or your child is attending with a friend. If you need to make adjustments, such as change weeks or change camps, you have the time to do that without incurring a fee.*

2. Cost savings

Families who use early bird registration pay no registration fees along with last season’s camp tuition rates. Registrants must be YMCA members to take advantage of these early bird prices.

3. Affordability

By registering early, you have more time to pay off your balance, set aside money, and see if you qualify for other benefits, including sibling discounts. The YMCA provides financial assistance to help eligible families afford camp, and families will need to fill out an application to determine if they qualify. Families may also be eligible for other types of aid such as camp scholarships through organizations like the American Camp Association.

4. Preparations

You’ll also have more time to get your child excited about camp, especially if this is their first time. Children (and parents) can have anxieties about going to camp, but knowing plans early can help you prepare the whole family for the experience. Talk to kids about how they’ll make new friends at camp, and all the fun memories they’ll create.

5. Peace of mind

Knowing that you have a plan in place once school’s out can be reassuring. It’s one more thing to check off that endless “to-do” list.

*Ask your local YMCA camp about deadlines for making changes to your camp plans.
