Children show an art project in Emergency Child Care.

The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is closely monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and taking steps to protect the health and wellness of our staff, members, program participants and community members. We have begun to reopen our facilities and reactivate key programs. Visit our Reopening Page to learn more about our phased approached to reopening the Y. Due to statewide mandates, our indoor fitness centers currently remain closed. We will provide details on our website, and via email, as the situation changes.

Child care for essential workers

During the months of April, May, and June, the Y temporarily opened two of its licensed child care facilities in East Orange and Livingston for families of health care workers, first responders, and other essential personnel who needed care for their children during the coronavirus pandemic. This program provided care for more than 80 children, without a single outbreak of COVID-19. We have since reopened our child care centers to all families with new health and safety guidelines.

Blood Drives

The YMCA has planned the following donation drives to meet an ongoing need of blood in hospitals and healthcare facilities. The Red Cross and Vitalant are also testing blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies.

  • Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, 1035 Fairview Lake Rd., Stillwater
    • Wednesday, Sept. 30
    • 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
    • Click here to schedule an appointment online.
  • Wayne YMCA, 1 Pike Dr., Wayne
    • Tuesday, Nov. 3

Food Distribution

With more individuals and families facing health and economic hardships and relying on local resources for meals, the Y is stepping up to help

The Greater Bergen County YMCA has stablished a program to assist in collecting and distributing food with the Carroll Family. The Carroll Family has been providing much needed food to Hackensack school children and their families who do not qualify for government food programs during this public health pandemic.

  • Anyone can donate; donations may include non-perishable food items. They especially need rice and canned or dried beans. Items donated Monday through Thursday will be delivered to the Carroll Family on Fridays by the Y.
  • For the safety of all, this food drive is contact-less. Those who wish to donate can drop off non-perishable items to the Y located at, 360 Main Street, Hackensack (a block before Sears). Contact-less drop off will occur Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Main Street entrance. Please leave items on our front porch and call 201-487-6600 x0 to let us know a donation has been dropped off.

The Wayne YMCA will continue its Farmers Market with drive-through pickup. Residents can pre-order food from a variety of vendors and pick it up Saturday mornings in May at the Y from 10 a.m. -12 p.m.

The Wayne YMCA is also leading a community-wide effort to provide food to individuals and families in need of assistance.

The South Mountain, East Orange and West Essex YMCAs, and Fairview Lake YMCA Camps continue to distribute food in collaboration with businesses and organizations in NJ.

Through a new partnership with Seashore Fruit & Produce Co., food is distributed weekly at South Mountain and East Orange YMCAs, West Essex YMCA, Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, Greater Bergen County YMCA, and Wayne YMCA.

Stay Connected

Regular exercise is one component of a healthy lifestyle that can help reduce stress and prevent illness. If you're not ready to return to the gym yet, we have a variety of at-home exercise options for you to try.

We also have resources for children and families, including activities to try at home.

Join us on social media to stay engaged with your YMCA and to learn about the ways in which we're supporting the community.

Impacts to our staff

The loss of revenue associated with the closure of our Y branches has resulted in unimagined financial circumstances, requiring a temporary layoff of many of our staff members, effective March 31.

To help employees affected by the closure of our facilities, you can make a secure online donation to our Employee Assistance Fund.

Membership

We are grateful for the many members who have decided to keep their membership active during our closures. Governor Murphy has announced that indoor gyms and health clubs can reopen as of Sept. 1, 2020, at 25 percent capacity. Our Sussex County, Wayne, and West Essex Y branches plan to reopen indoor gym facilities on Sept. 2, and the Greater Bergen County Y plans to reopen Sept. 4. Currently, our branches are open for active members to enjoy outdoor wellness programs, swim lessons and lap swimming, personal training by appointment, and virtual programming.

From Sept. 4-7, we are offering a membership special including a $0 joiner fee for our full-facility branches: Greater Bergen, Sussex County, Wayne and West Essex Ys.

For any membership inquiries, please contact member@metroymcas.org.

Our Child Care Centers and After-School Programs

We began to safely reopen our child care locations on June 22, after successfully operating Emergency Child Care for essential workers at two of our child care facilities. Many new protocols and procedures have been implemented in accordance with the latest directives from the CDC and state and local health departments, and staff members are undergoing extensive training to prepare. We are currently enrolling children in our early childhood programs at our East Orange, Greater Bergen County, South Mountain, Wayne, and West Essex YMCA branches.

We are actively working to open fall registration for our school-age child care programs. Families can visit our Child Care page to learn more about registering for programs at their local branch.

Summer Camp Programs

We were able to provide more than 2,000 children a safe environment to reconnect with friends, engage their minds, and stay active this summer, all without a single reported positive case of COVID-19 in our summer day camps. We are excited to offer an extended day camp program, School Year Day Camp, at our Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, to support families during remote learning.

Financial Assistance

We know many families have been financially impacted by the coronavirus. The YMCA’s financial assistance program is available to families who need assistance in paying for camp or other YMCA programs.

How you can help

To support the Y financially, please consider continuing your recurring membership draft. When you joined the Y, you joined more than a gym. You also joined a cause. By continuing to pay your membership fee, you will allow us to maintain the financial resources needed to focus our time, people and energies to the most pressing needs in the community. Your support is needed as we work to provide needed services in the community, and so that we have the resources and tools to get back up and running when we do re-open.

Additional resources

Thank you for working with us to ensure the health of your fellow members, our YMCA and the community. We look forward to seeing you soon.
