Y Facilities Are Temporarily Closed

Due to the statewide mandates to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), all Y facilities are closed until further notice, except for those providing child care to essential workers or other needed community services. We are quickly responding to this change and will provide details on our website, and via email, as the situation changes.

Child care for essential workers

The Y has temporarily opened two of its licensed child care facilities in East Orange and Livingston for families of health care workers, first responders, and other essential personnel who need care for their children during the coronavirus pandemic. Families do not need to be YMCA members to utilize this program.

Locations, ages, and operating hours include:

  • East Orange YMCA, 314 William St., East Orange
    • First date is Friday, April 3
    • Ages 3-13
    • 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Peanut Shell Early Learning Childhood Center (part of the West Essex YMCA), 7 Regent St., #706, Livingston
    • First date is Thursday, April 2
    • Ages 6 weeks to 13 years
    • 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday

To learn more and register for the program, visit our Emergency Child Care page.

Blood Drives

The YMCA has planned the following donation drives to meet an ongoing need of blood in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

  • Wayne YMCA, 1 Pike Dr., Wayne
    • Wednesday, May 13
    • 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Visit redcrossblood.org for appointments and eligibility.
  • Sussex County YMCA, 15 Wits End Rd., Hardyston
  • Fairview Lake YMCA Camps
    • Monday, May 11
    • 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

  • South Mountain YMCA, 10 West Parker Ave., Maplewood
    • Friday, May 29 and Sunday, June 28
    • 9:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m.
    • Visit redcrossblood.org for appointments and eligibility.

Food Distribution

The Greater Bergen County YMCA has stablished a program to assist in collecting and distributing food with the Carroll Family. The Carroll Family has been providing much needed food to Hackensack school children and their families who do not qualify for government food programs during this public health pandemic.

Anyone can donate; donations may include non-perishable food items. They especially need rice and canned or dried beans. Items donated Monday through Thursday will be delivered to the Carroll Family on Fridays by the Y.

For the safety of all, this food drive is contact-less. Those who wish to donate can drop off non-perishable items to the Y located at, 360 Main Street, Hackensack (a block before Sears). Contact-less drop off will occur Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Main Street entrance. Please leave items on our front porch and call 201-487-6600 x0 to let us know a donation has been dropped off.

The Wayne YMCA will continue its Farmers Market with drive-through pickup. Residents can pre-order food from a variety of vendors and pick it up Saturday mornings in May at the Y from 10 a.m. -12 p.m.

Our branches in Hackensack, Maplewood, Newton and Wayne are also coordinating with local organizations to distribute food. Check back for details.

Stay Connected

Regular exercise is one component of a healthy lifestyle that can help reduce stress and prevent illness. Even though you can't visit the Y, we want you to stay healthy. We have a variety of at-home exercise options for you to try.

We also have resources for children and families, including activities to try at home.

Impacts to our staff

The loss of revenue associated with the closure of our Y branches has resulted in unimagined financial circumstances, requiring a temporary layoff of many of our staff members, effective March 31.

To help employees affected by the closure of our facilities, you can make a secure online donation to our Employee Assistance Fund.

Membership - Member Incentive

We are grateful for the many members who have decided to keep their membership active during this time. We want to thank you for staying with us during this time and will provide your incentive once we're open. If you have already made payment arrangements with our staff, that request will be honored. For any membership inquiries, please contact member@metroymcas.org.

Our Child Care Centers and After-School Programs

Knowing the Governor has closed us until further notice, we will not be reopening on March 31st as planned. We have suspended all recurring child care payments until we’re open. If you have already paid for upcoming classes or programs like Vacation Camp and they will not run, we will provide a credit to your account which can be applied towards future YMCA programs.

Knowing that the Governor has closed schools for the remainder of this academic year, and due to the uncertainty with school reopening in the fall, we are not able to open fall registration for our school-age child care programs at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate the next steps to our parents by June 15.

For questions about tuition, please contact your branch using the corresponding email address:

Summer Camp Programs

Summer camp will be more important than ever for children as we emerge from this pandemic. While we do not have an official reopening date at the moment for our Y facilities, we remain hopeful and are planning to welcome our new and returning campers for another exceptional summer camp season as scheduled.

We have modified our refund policy in regards to summer camp. From now until June 14, we will refund all fees paid to date less the non-refundable deposit made. If you or your partner have lost your job as a result of the pandemic, we will offer a full refund for all camp fees paid to date.

From June 14 until the first day of your child's camp, we will provide a full refund of all camp fees paid, including your deposit if you feel it’s best not to send your child this summer. If camp is cancelled, the YMCA will provide a full refund of all fees paid, including your deposit.

Camp payments will still draft as scheduled, however, if your situation has changed and you would like to modify your payment schedule, please contact us via email:

Financial Assistance

We know many families have been financially impacted by the coronavirus. The YMCA’s financial assistance program is available to families who need assistance in paying for camp or other YMCA programs.

How you can help

To support the Y financially, please consider continuing your recurring membership draft. When you joined the Y, you joined more than a gym. You also joined a cause. By continuing to pay your membership fee, you will allow us to maintain the financial resources needed to focus our time, people and energies to the most pressing needs in the community. Your support is needed as we work to provide needed services in the community, and so that we have the resources and tools to get back up and running when we do re-open.

Additional resources

Thank you for working with us to ensure the health of your fellow members, our YMCA and the community. We look forward to seeing you soon.
