LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges now offers a new Virtual Kindergarten Readiness Program to help preschool-age children develop the skills they’ll need as kindergarteners.

Starting Monday, April 20, the Y’s Virtual Kindergarten Readiness Program features activities designed to enhance and develop a child's social-emotional, cognitive, and language development as they prepare for kindergarten. Children learn in a small group setting via Zoom technology, with opportunities for sharing.

This program is open to all children ages 4-6. Led by experienced Y child care instructors, sessions are 45 minutes and available two days or three days a week.

The program’s curriculum aligns with the NJ Preschool Standards and The Creative Curriculum Objectives for Development & Learning. Weekly themes include “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” “Signs of Spring,” “Gardening,” and more.

The safety and protection of children is the Y’s top priority. Staff undergo thorough background and reference checks, and receive several hours of training in child development and safety, including Child Abuse Prevention.

Current Y members are eligible for reduced rates. The YMCA also offers financial assistance to help eligible families pay for this program or other Y programs.

The Virtual Kindergarten Readiness follows the launch of the Metro YMCA’s Virtual Distance Learning Support program, which is geared toward families with school-age children now juggling e-learning and remote work duties.

“With the closure of schools due to current public health risks, children of all ages are now having to adjust to new methods of learning and parents now have the added responsibility of being teachers,” said Richard K. Gorab, President and CEO of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges. “This program is another way in which the Y provides youth and families the resources they need to succeed outside of the classroom.”
