(EAST ORANGE, NJ) - The East Orange YMCA has been selected for the 2020 Best of East Orange Award in the Youth Organization category by the East Orange Award Program.

Each year, the East Orange Award Program identifies companies that are believed to have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the East Orange area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2020 East Orange Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the East Orange Award Program and data provided by third parties.

“We’re thrilled to have been selected by the East Orange Award Program for our service in the community,” said Washima Redding, East Orange Y Executive Director. “The East Orange Y has been helping youth learn, grow, and thrive on a daily basis through our child care, summer camp, and sports and swim programs. Despite challenges of this year’s pandemic, we’ve adapted to the needs of our youth in the community and continue to provide child care, healthy food for meals to combat food insecurity, free K-readiness and distance learning support, and additional virtual programming to support youth at home including crafts, games, STEAM and physical activity.”

During the coronavirus pandemic, the East Orange Y opened to provide child care for families of emergency healthcare workers and other essential personnel, and has been distributing food to more than 200 area residents each week at the branch since May. The Y recently held a diaper drive to provide diapers and wipes for nearly 100 families in need of these basic needs.
