It's easy to get wrapped up in our workout routines and forget about our own habits at the gym or fitness center. In addition, the YMCA has updated many of its policies to make working out as safe and successful as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following these basic etiquette tips can ensure everyone who uses the gym is able to have a safe and positive experience.
Bring personal items.
Since certain services are suspended due to health and safety precautions, members should bring their own personal items for use when exercising such as a face mask, towel, and water bottle. Some group fitness classes or personal training sessions may require you to bring equipment like a yoga mat or weights.
Reserve time when possible.
If you're looking to do more than just cardio or weightlifting at the gym, check the schedule to see if reservations are needed for classes and use of athletic courts and the pool.
Keep equipment clean.
To minimize the spread of germs that cause illness and infections, wipe down cardio machines and other gym equipment when you’re finished using it. A towel is good for wiping off sweat, but the towel alone won’t kill any viruses or bacteria. You can use the cleaning products the gym provides, or bring your own disinfecting wipes or solution. Wash your hands with soap and warm water before and after workouts to further reduce the spread of germs.
Remember your mask!
Face masks provide a barrier that keeps respiratory droplets from spreading, the CDC says. In addition, they can help prevent an asymptomatic person from inadvertently infecting another person. Anyone over age 2 who isn't fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must wear a face mask while using indoor facilities at the Metro YMCAs.
Face masks are considered safe while exercising for most people and wearers shouldn't see a difference in aerobic or anaerobic performance, according to the Mayo Clinic. Packing an extra face mask is also a good idea when visiting the gym, as the first one could break, become sweaty, or get misplaced.
Keep your workout area clear.
Be mindful of the number of items you have with you and where you put them while working out. “It’s not only rude to leave weights and other equipment scattered around a workout space, but it sets the stage for completely avoidable accidents and injuries to occur,” states the American Council on Exercise. When finished using weights, mats or other equipment, put them back where they’re stored. Keep unneeded personal items in a locker or other safe place.
Be respectful of others.
Each person who comes to the gym has their own fitness goals and plans to achieve them, but everyone shares the goal of being healthy. Be supportive by refraining from distracting others who are exercising by playing music too loud, talking on your phone, or having long conversations. Follow your gym’s requirements for social distancing as well as time limits for equipment, especially during busy time periods when many people are working out.
Follow the signs.
To help keep members safe, we've put up signs and markers to indicate our current health guidelines. Help do your part by demonstrating the YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility toward members and staff.
