A Welcoming Place to Work

Bill SanFilippo with a YMCA Pride Display

Bill SanFilippo has been Director of Business Development at the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges for nearly four years. In addition to his busy job serving seven branches, he’s also become involved with a number of groups within the Y association that have helped him build connections and shape his view of the “Y for All.”

Q: How did your YMCA career begin?

A: I was always familiar with the YMCA but I never really understood the depth of commitment it had in strengthening communities. After an eight year career with the local Boy Scouts of America council, I decided it was time for a change. I knew I wanted to work at a place that was there to help the community. After an extensive search, I knew that the Y was a place for me. In October of 2018, I began at the Y as the Director of Business Development.

Q: In addition to your everyday responsibilities, you also sit on various committees. How has this involvement influenced your professional and personal experiences?

A: It’s nice to be in an organization that welcomes everybody. Being involved has allowed me to not only grow professionally and personally but make connections that will help with my continued growth. We are able to share ideas and feel comfortable with our coworkers. Through these committees we are also able to educate, celebrate and share with others. These open conversations have allowed us to do more for our communities.

Q: How has your understanding of “Y for All” changed since working at the Y?

A: I have certainly learned a lot since coming to the Y. Y for All truly means that people of all abilities, ages, backgrounds, ethnicities/races, faiths, gender identities, sexual orientations and interests are welcome at the Y. It’s a definite safe space for anybody. The Y has come a long way in this space, and we have the structure in place to take on the opportunity in front of us to grow upon our Y for All.

Congratulations, Bill! I was privileged to be in a training class you led in Sussex County and you could not have been more patient, kind or gracious. A well deserved recognition 👏

It's truly hopeful to reach these words. In a world that, although evolving, still shuns those who don't fit the conventional gender profile, to know that the Y is truly dedicated to serving all in the community sparks a sense of hope and, dare I say it, happiness. Kudos to Bill for his vision and Mollie for getting the news out! I avoided gender-teared titles because we should no longer assume anything! :-)
