HACKENSACK, NJ - The Greater Bergen County YMCA, a branch of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges located at 360 Main St. in Hackensack, is under contract for sale with a development partner. While the Y will be relocating many of its programs and services effective March 31, 2022, it will continue to operate its School Age Child Care programs in Hackensack schools.

The Y announced in October of 2019 that it was working with a local real estate firm, NAI Hanson, to sell the building and identify a new location for a full-facility YMCA. The current building has been declining for over a decade and the branch’s operational deficits have prohibited the capital investment needed for ongoing use.

“The Greater Bergen Y continues to explore opportunities to collaborate with local organizations so that it can continue day-to-day operations and remain in the community it has served for over 90 years,” said Richard K. Gorab, President and CEO of the Metro YMCAs. “We’re happy to have found a partner who wants to contribute to the redevelopment in the City of Hackensack.”

The Y is opening a new location called Greater Bergen County YMCA - New Milford Center on April 1. Greater Bergen County YMCA - New Milford Center would feature contemporary classroom space for children as young as 6 weeks and up to age 5, and multipurpose rooms and outdoor fields that will provide space for the Y to run youth sports and camp programs, and space inside for wellness programming for youth and adults of all ages to start April 1, 2022, with programs beginning to roll out through the month.

“The Y has been a welcoming place for all members of the community who want to live a healthy lifestyle and reach their full potential. The Y remains committed to working with local partners to serve the greater community,” said Glenn MacAfee, Executive Director of the Greater Bergen Y.
