Role Helps YMCA Staffer Connect with Community

Erin Gilgur helps box up food for distribution during a Wayne YMCA event.
Name: Erin Gilgur
First Y Role: Stage Manager
Current Job Role: Community Engagement and Membership Coordinator, Wayne YMCA
How many years at your current Y: 8
Q: How did your YMCA career begin?
A: I began helping out as a stage manager for some dance recitals at the Wayne Y. I loved being back in the theater and would help out whenever I could. Then I was hired as a technical director in the theater department as well as directing many of the mainstage productions at the Y. I then began to teach theater for kids in the Early Childhood Learning Center, and I was in charge of the birthday parties. I was always helping out in various departments where I could because I really do see the sense of community here at the Wayne Y. During the pandemic we were not having shows in the theater, so I helped take temperatures when members arrived and worked at the Welcome Center. After a few months I saw the Community Engagement position posted and I applied right away.
Q: What’s great about working for the Y in your role?
A: This role put me in charge of the town farmers market, which is run by the Y, all of the food distribution, which we were providing to almost 250 families a week at its peak, and all large community events. I have loved connecting with my community and offering them new programs based on their requests or needs. The Y has some great programs, and I enjoy sharing these and welcoming new families to our Y family.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at the Y?
A: I love the sense of community. I grew up here, and I bring my kids here.
