LIVINGSTON, NJ -  The West Essex YMCA announces the opening of enrollment in its Piranhas Special Olympics Swim Team and is offering the program for free for the first time since the onset of the pandemic. The season, which will run through May 19, will feature practices on Sunday afternoons, with the exception of Easter Sunday.

The Piranhas provide an opportunity for adults with disabilities to develop their swimming strengths and compete in partnership with the Special Olympics of New Jersey. The program is made possible through a partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Livingston and Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide more opportunities for people in the community looking for affordable adaptive swim programs,” said Competitive Aquatics Director James Butcher. “The Piranhas program is not only about physical fitness and skill development but also about fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals can flourish and excel.”

Beyond the swim season, the Y is dedicated to expanding its year-round activities both in and out of the pool, aiming to provide families with a variety of engaging opportunities. To further enhance its Special Olympics program, the Y is actively seeking additional athletes who are passionate about making a positive impact within the community. For those interested in joining the team or volunteering, inquiries can be directed to James Butcher at jbutcher@metroymcas.org.
