CALDWELL, NJ - Growing up attending summer camp was a “life-changing” experience for Brian Mateer. He wants to bring that same transformative experience as the new Director of the West Essex YMCA’s Pioneer Trails Day Camp, kicking off on June 24 at Caldwell University.

"Camp played a significant role in shaping my identity. It was a space where I could truly be myself and just let go of school-related concerns for a while. I hope to recreate that same experience at Pioneer Trails, so every camper has a safe, fun, and memorable time at camp,” said Mateer.

Mateer previously served as Day Camp Director at YMCA Camp Kanata in Wake Forest, NC. During his two years as director, he built a safe and inclusive environment where campers could take a break from technology and make new friends. He grew up attending the same camp and eventually became a counselor, before advancing to leadership roles. He’s worked for the Y for nine years, and holds a degree in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill.

“We are excited to have Brian join our team,” said Cheryl Tuturice, District Executive Director at West Essex YMCA. “His expertise and enthusiasm are exactly what we need to take our Pioneer Trails camp program to the next level. We are confident that under his direction, our campers will have an enriching and memorable summer.”

Pioneer Trails is open to children in grades K-8 and runs June 24-Aug. 16, 2024, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. each weekday. Bussing is provided from Livingston, Montclair, West Orange, and the Caldwells.

Campers will have daily swimming lessons and Club Time, where they can choose what activities to explore. Campers also get to enjoy special events throughout summer, including the Camp Olympics and Family Nights.

Caldwell University provides a gorgeous setting for camp, with tons of outdoor space and amenities for swimming and sports.
