Swim Lessons | New Jersey

For over 100 years, the YMCA has been one of America's favorite swim instructors and a leader in water safety. Our proven curriculum and friendly environment enhance skills, all while having fun.

At the Y, swimming is a life skill. We offer a wide selection of parent & child, preschool, school-age, teen, and adult swim lessons that build strong and confident swimmers. All age groups are taught the same skills but divided according to their developmental milestones.

How to Enroll

If you're new to swim lessons at the Y, or are unsure about your child's swim level, we recommend coming to the Y for a free Swim Evaluation. This will help ensure your child is placed in the right class based on their swimming abilities. Families can register online or by calling 973-758-9039.

Private Swim Lessons

The YMCA Swim Lesson Curriculum is a core group of aquatic skills every person needs to be safe around water. As the foundation of our program, these skills allow students to learn correct swim stroke techniques. Students begin with and build upon skills they are ready to learn, helping them to celebrate their successes, build self-confidence, and enjoy learning to swim and water safety.

Our Private Swim Lessons provide more flexibility and one-on-one instruction at a time that is convenient for you and your family. Our experienced instructors teach core swimming skills and stroke techniques so children and adults can become more confident swimmers. Private swim lessons will be offered in 1:1 and 2:1 ratios.

Note: Group lesson sizes and ratios will vary by branch.

Testimonials

"[Tommy] was sooo patient with Elijah, taking it slow to allow his comfort level to increase, constant praise as he completed each task and keeping my overall anxiety under wraps. I was super proud of Elijah but happy I chose to send him to the East Orange program. We obviously work in a community where fear of the water is common but to learn how to swim is a necessary life skill. We have the perfect size pool to address fears and common misconceptions about the water. I think Elijah’s fear was non existent because of 1. Him getting a little older, 2. Tommy’s patience but 3. The size of that pool. It's not intimidating at all and I think we can capitalize on that. I’m happy to see our pool open again and great things are going to happen."- YMCA Parent
