Group Exercise Instructor

The YMCA of Greater Bergen County is seeking Group Exercise Instructors to lead energizing, fun, safe and educational group classes, as needed.  The program area opportunities are Kick Boxing Instructor, Zumba Instructor and Senior Fitness.  Excellent customer service skills, leadership, high energy and enthusiasm are essential for this position.  All candidates must be passionate about working with people and willing to help members with their health and well-being. The right candidates will provide and ensure challenging, high quality fitness classes for members, a contemporary and innovative exercise class program, and a positive and encouraging YMCA image for members. We seek staff who will be responsible for creating a friendly, service-oriented atmosphere, build and strengthen relationships, cultivating community, motivating and supporting members with their health and well-being goals. Essential functions are, but not limited to:

  • Instruct safe and effective group exercise classes that meet the needs of all participants, beginning and ending classes on time.
  • Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Provide and demonstrate appropriate warm-up exercises and cool downs, and modify routines according to participant fitness levels.
  • Greet members and acquaint new participants with class procedures to create a welcoming environment.
  • Monitor proper form and technique using positive reinforcement.
  • Plan and provide appropriate and motivating music for classes.
  • Provide high degree of member service through professional relationship with the members in regard to their needs, concerns, and questions about the YMCA, its programs and mission.
  • Responsible for participant safety- inspect program area, equipment, supplies and notify supervisor of equipment in need of repair.
  • Educate members on current health and fitness issues and trends.
  • Conduct classes that are well organized.
  • Activity participate in designated staff meetings and trainings related to the position.

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current Group Fitness Certification from a nationally recognized organization (example – ACE, AFAA, or YMCA)
  • Minimum 1 year consistent teaching experience is preferred
  • Ability to teach 2 or more class formats is desired
  • Current CPR/AED certifications.


Various Schedules available. Flexibility in work schedule is required.  Kickboxing Instruction - Tuesdays 7:00pm - 8:00pm;  Zumba Instruction - Monday & Friday 6:30pm - 7:30pm; Senior Instruction - Monday - Friday 10:00am - 11:00am.
