Description:

The YMCA of Greater Bergen County is seeking a part-time Assistant Teacher for the Early Childhood Learning Center. The position is responsible for assisting teachers with  implementing curriculum and providing a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for children. The Assistant Teacher will help to provide a child centered educational environment, that encourages learning through exploration and discovery and promotes the development of a positive self-image.

  • Assist the Teacher with implementing developmentally appropriate and creative activities; assume the Teacher responsibilities when Teacher is absent.
  • Develop and administer small group activities that include music, games, art, science, cooking, emergent literacy and gym.
  • Communicate with children in a respectful manner and adhere to positive discipline policies. Assist Teacher in carrying out classroom management techniques that encourage independence and foster development of self-control.
  • Regularly communicate with the Teacher to discuss lesson plans and activities, to ensure a good working relationship.
  • Maintain an organized classroom, by taking responsibility for the upkeep of educational equipment and materials.
  • Communicate with parents, as directed, to promote an understanding of the growth and development of their child and encourage parent participation in special events, conferences and meetings.
  • Work cooperatively with professional staff, counselors, and other departments.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma; Degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in a group setting with preschool children.
  • Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communicate skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED Certifications.
  • Experience in assisting with curriculum implementation and being a contributing team member is essential.
  • Flexible schedule Monday-Friday, 3:30pm - 8:30pm
