The YMCA understands that working from home has its challenges, especially for parents with school-age children who are now learning remotely.

The YMCA‘s Virtual Distance Learning Support program alleviates this stress on families who are now working from home and providing educational instruction to their children during the day.

The program offers virtual one-on-one support with school assignments for youth in grades K-8 from M-F 9am-5pm. Our qualified child care professionals and staff who have experience working with school-age youth will help your child complete school assignments through one-hour live virtual sessions.

Families can choose the days and times that are convenient for them. Parents will provide information about their expectations, child’s personality, and learning style in advance, and be matched with an instructor.

Our instructors will review all subject material ahead of time, so they are fully prepared to help your child succeed in their daily work.

How much does it cost?

Sessions can be purchased online only. Once the session has been purchased, the YMCA instructor will contact the parent to schedule the day and time of the session. This will be based on the availability of the instructor and the parent/child. Multiple sessions may be purchase at a time. A discount of 5% will be applied for purchases of 10 or more sessions. 1 session = 1 hour

What are the YMCA staff qualifications?

Our instructors all have experience working with youth in YMCA child care or youth enrichment programs. Many of our instructors work at director-level positions within our YMCA association, with a solid background of leading child care programs and staff. Though a college degree is not required for this program, our current instructors have degrees in education or a related field of study, and several years of teaching experience.

Are staff background checked?

Yes, all Metro YMCA employees undergo a thorough background screening including criminal history, sex offender and reference checks.

What training do staff receive?

Our staff are required to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training, as well as trainings on policies, procedures and risk management. Each staff member is required by the NJ Department of Children and Families to obtain 30 hours of additional training in child development and safety.

Are certified teachers available?

Our staff have experience working with school age children and have a variety of educational backgrounds relative to this program including degrees in education or related areas of study. Certified teachers may be assigned based on availability.

Will my child be instructed one-on-one?

Yes, all virtual sessions will be conducted one-on-one with a YMCA instructor utilizing Zoom.

What technology is needed?

You will need a computer with a camera and an internet connection. Sessions will be conducted through Zoom. You do not need a Zoom account to access Zoom. An access link will be provided prior to your first session.

What does a session include?

During each session, your instructor will work with your child to complete their school work. You will be asked to provide the lessons prior to the live session to allow for our instructors to prepare. We ask that you are present with your child at the start and end of each live session for a brief greeting and closing. We will also conduct a 15-minute live introductory session to allow for you and your child to get to know your instructor.

What material will be used?

We will use the material that is provided by your child’s school. We’ll focus on the lesson that you select. We ask that you provide the material at least 1 hour in advance of your scheduled session so that our instructors can prepare.

How do I sign up?

Registration for this program must be done online. Unfortunately we cannot accept registration over the phone or in person.

Do I need to be a member?

This service is open to YMCA members and non-members. Members are eligible to receive reduced rates.

Can I apply for financial assistance?

Financial assistance may be provided based on availability. Please email us for more information.

What school grades are eligible?

This service is available for children in grades K – 8, but may be limited based on the experience and availability of our instructors.

What days and times are sessions available?

Sessions are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Once you purchase your session online, a YMCA representative will contact you to discuss availability and book your session.

Can I register for multiple sessions with the same instructor?

Yes, once you purchase your session online, a YMCA representative will contact you to discuss availability and book your session. Please mention this during this time.

How can I contact my child’s instructor?

We ask that communication with your instructor be conducted through email. Your instructor will provide you with their contact information prior to your first session.

Is there a sibling discount?

In order to keep the session fee affordable, we’re unable to offer a sibling discount. You can save by purchasing a YMCA membership and by purchasing five or ten sessions at a time.

Can I use my Y Bucks credit?

Yes. To use your Y Bucks credit, please fill out the form below to get connected with a Y representative to apply your credit towards the program.

Can I change my child’s instructor?

Yes. You can request a change by emailing us. We will do our best to accommodate change requests.

Can I request an instructor?

Yes. You can do this during the online registration process by entering the instructor’s name in the field provided. We will do our best to accommodate your requests, but cannot guarantee specific days, times and the availability of our instructors.

Is this tutoring?

We do not consider this tutoring. Our instructors will assist your child in completing school assignments. Formalized instruction is not included.
