VIRTUAL TUTORING

The YMCA’s Virtual Tutoring program offers one-on-one virtual support with specific subjects for children in grades K-8. Sessions are conducted using Zoom technology and available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Each session lasts one hour.

Sessions must be booked online. A Y instructor will contact parents to schedule the day and time of sessions within 24 hours of booking online.

So that Y instructors are better equipped to help students, we will provide an initial assessment to determine a child’s specific areas of need.

How much does it cost?

Families can purchase multiple sessions at one time; a discount of 5 percent will be applied to purchase of 10 or more sessions.

FAQs

What are the YMCA staff qualifications?

Our staff have experience working with children and have a variety of educational backgrounds relative to this program including degrees in education or related areas of study.

Are staff background checked?

Yes, all Metro YMCA employees undergo a thorough background screening including criminal history, sex offender, and reference checks.

What training do staff receive?

Safety is our top priority. Our instructors are required to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training, trainings on policies, procedures, and risk management, as well as Live Virtual Programs Safety and Security Guidelines. Instructors also receive ongoing training on program quality and techniques for working with youth.

Are certified teachers available?

Yes. We will assign a certified teacher or you can request an instructor based on their availability.

Will my child be instructed one-on-one?

Yes, all virtual sessions will be conducted one-on-one with a YMCA instructor.

What technology is needed?

You will need a computer with a camera and an internet connection. Sessions will be conducted through Zoom or similar program. An access link will be provided prior to your first session.

What does a session include?

Sessions will be for one hour. An initial assessment will be conducted during the first session. This information will be used to identify areas of need such as reading, math, writing, phonics and vocabulary. Sessions will focus on developing skills in these areas and will also include class assignments provided by your child’s school.

What material will be used?

The initial assessment will determine the areas of focus for your child. Your instructor will use this information to develop lessons that will support your child’s development in each area. We’ll also use the material provided by your child’s school. We ask that you provide the material at least 1 hour in advance of your scheduled session so that our instructors can prepare.

How do I sign up?

Registration for this program must be done online. Unfortunately, we cannot accept registration over the phone or in person.

Do I need to be a member?

This service is open to YMCA members and non-members. Members are eligible to receive reduced rates.

Can I apply for financial assistance?

What school grades are eligible?

This service is available for children in grades K – 8, but may be limited based on the experience and availability of our instructors.

What days and times are sessions available?

Sessions are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Once you purchase your sessions online, a YMCA representative will contact you within 24 hours to discuss availability and book your sessions.

How can I contact my child’s instructor?

We ask that communication with your instructor be conducted through email. Your instructor will provide you with their contact information prior to your first session.

Is there a sibling discount?

In order to keep the session fee affordable, we’re unable to offer a sibling discount. Additional discounts may be available by purchasing 10 sessions or more at a time.

Can I change my child’s instructor?

Yes. You can request a change by filling out the form below. We will do our best to accommodate change requests.

Can I request an instructor?

Yes. You can do this during the online registration process by entering the instructor's name in the field provided. We will do our best to accommodate your requests, but cannot guarantee specific days, times, and the availability of our instructors.

What is the difference between the Virtual Distance Learning Support and Virtual Tutoring programs?

Virtual Distance Learning Support provides support with school assignments. Virtual Tutoring provides additional support based on your child’s learning needs and also includes the use of an online education program.
