Assistant Teacher

The YMCA of Greater Bergen County is seeking an Assistant Teacher for the Early Childhood Learning Center. The position is responsible for assisting teachers with  implementing curriculum and providing a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for children. The Assistant Teacher will help to provide a child centered educational environment, that encourages learning through exploration and discovery and promotes the development of a positive self-image.

  • Assist the Teacher with implementing developmentally appropriate and creative activities; assume the Teacher responsibilities when Teacher is absent.
  • Develop and administer small group activities that include music, games, art, science, cooking, emergent literacy and gym.
  • Communicate with children in a respectful manner and adhere to positive discipline policies. Assist Teacher in carrying out classroom management techniques that encourage independence and foster development of self-control.
  • Regularly communicate with the Teacher to discuss lesson plans and activities, to ensure a good working relationship.
  • Maintain an organized classroom, by taking responsibility for the upkeep of educational equipment and materials.
  • Communicate with parents, as directed, to promote an understanding of the growth and development of their child and encourage parent participation in special events, conferences and meetings.
  • Work cooperatively with professional staff, counselors, and other departments.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation.

The Y provides Maplewood and South Orange community with engaging programs including homework support, sports and games, arts and crafts and special events. Program serves the following elementary schools: Clinton, Jefferson, Marshall, Seth Boyden, South Mountain, South Mountain Annex, and Tuscan. Additionally, we have programs at the Civic House at Memorial Field in Maplewood and The South Mountain YMCA Program Center.

We are currently recruiting for the following part-time positions:

 

Site Supervisors

Site Supervisors lead the day-to-day operations at the program site, ensuring all children are actively engaged in the YMCA program.  The Site Supervisor requires a high degree of organization, and the ability to lead staff and maintain a safe and caring before and afterschool environment. Minimum Requirements: Very organized with experience leading staff and working with children in a group setting in Before/After School programs. High school diploma required, college credits/degree preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with parents and school staff is essential.  

Group Leaders and Group Assistants

The Group Leader is responsible for assisting the Site Supervisor in the day to day operations of the School Age Before or After Care program site. The Group Leader provides a high level of supervision for the children in his/her care and leads or assists with activities as directed by the Site Supervisor. The Group Leader works as part of a team to ensure that a safe and caring environment is provided for all children at all times. Minimum Requirement: Ability to lead and/or assist children with positive group activities in a nurturing environment. Candidates will be a positive role model ensuring safety of the children at all times.

The Assistant Group Leader is responsible for assisting the Group Leaders and Site Supervisor in the day to day operations of the School Age Before or After Care program site. The Assistant Group Leader provides a high level of supervision for the children in his/her care and leads or assists with activities as directed by the Site Supervisor. Schedule: Monday - Friday

Business Administrator

East Orange YMCA, a branch of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, is seeking a qualified individual with excellent office management and supervisory skills to be responsible for all business functions of the branch, including supervision of the Welcome Center staff and program registrations.  This person will serve as a liaison between the East Orange YMCA and the organization’s Finance department; must ensure that all financial transactions and business procedures are followed at the Branch. The individual will support the overall operations and member service functions of the Welcome Center including selling membership and providing high quality customer service. The coach will be responsible for developing youth athletes in all aspects of swimming including mental, psychological and physical development. Environmental Education/Conference Instructors

Are you interested in teaching children about themselves and the nature that surrounds them? Fairview Lake YMCA Camps is a year-round residential outdoor education program that focuses on hands-on experiential education and outdoor courses for children in grades 2-8. Fairview Lake is located in the Northwest corner of New Jersey surrounded by 660 acres of swamp, forest and fields. We also reside on a mile long lake, our name sake. We are only an hour and a half drive to New York City!

Fairview Lake Environmental Education and Conference Instructors will teach pre-approved academic curriculum for ecologies, facilitate the teambuilding course, and lead campfires and night hikes. Environmental Education classes are a major portion of lessons led, however, some recreational activities like boating, climbing wall and orienteering occur regularly. Everyone will also lend a hand when it comes to projects; a few examples being: fixing equipment, upkeep of cabins and wood-splitting.

 

Fitness Floor Associate

Lifeguards:

Required to attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have high school diploma.
  • Must be certified and have completed an American Red Cross or YMCA lifeguard certification course successfully including First Aid, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a related field.

 

Swim Instructors:

Responsible for teaching Progressive Swim programs. Must ensure the safety of all students enrolled in classes while making learning experience enjoyable and fun for all the participants. Required to maintain the physical demands of the position and possess strong interpersonal skills to maintain a trusting relationship with children, parents, staff, and community and be able to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with YMCA standards.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certified as a Swim Instructor with the Red Cross or the YMCA.
  • Must have prior experience with children in a similar teaching setting.
  • Must be able to teach classes of up to 8 swimmers.
  • Must be able to teach different swim strokes and water acclimation for ages three through adults.
  • Must learn the curriculum for all swim levels.

Under the direction of the School Age Child Care (SACC) Director/Program Director, the Program Administrator will be responsible for directing and overseeing School Age Child Care Sites and Y programs as assigned, including vacation camp as needed. The Administrator will also serve in Summer Camp when SACC and other programs are out of season. The Program Administrator will participate in YMCA Community events as needed.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Direct oversight of School Age Child Care (Before and/or After Care) sites assigned with direct budget responsibly for those sites. Will travel between sites as needed.
  2. Coordinate staff and resources for sites and programs. Work with site supervisors, ensuring program meets the quality standards of the YMCA and NJ State regulations. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  3. Coordinate and supervise program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
  4. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  5. Maintain program budget to meet fiscal objectives as assigned.
  6. Will support other programs, in some capacity such as, Youth Enrichment, Adult Wellness, Summer Camp, Vacation Camp, and YMCA events, etc., as needed. May be responsible for oversite including growth and expansion.
  7. Coordinate use of facilities for program activities and events.
  8. Assist in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  9. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  10. Coordinates with SACC Director/Program Director, supporting the implementation of required training for staff as mandated by NJ State regulations and YMCA standards.
  11. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  12. Travel to and between sites.
  13. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

School Age Child Care Program Assistant

Theater Technical Coordinator

The Wayne YMCA, Rosen Performing Arts Center, is looking for a part-time, as needed, Theater Technical Coordinator. Under the direction of the Cultural Arts Director, the Theater Technical Coordinator will provide support for the technical operations of the performing arts center, including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance. The essential duties include, but not limited to:

  • Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.

Year-Round Program Instructors

Job responsibilities include teaching a variety of outdoor classes in the areas of ecology, natural history, team building and outdoor skills, assisting in evening programs like night hikes and camp fires, and developing new curriculum. A BA/BS is preferred but not required, however a love and wonder of the natural world, and an enthusiasm to work with children are requirements of the successful applicants. Being a team player and flexible in your teaching style is also vital.
