South Mountain YMCA

Serving to Bring the Maplewood Community Closer Together

Forming a sense of community is often challenging. We're all facing our own struggles and have to deal with full schedules. That’s why the South Mountain YMCA is helping to build a more connected community in Maplewood, NJ. First and foremost, we provide high-quality child care to kids of all ages and backgrounds. Our programs are specially designed to nurture children and help them discover their potential. What's more, our facility is proud to promote healthy living and social responsibility as crucial aspects of being an engaged citizen. Besides our work with children, we also strive to meet the needs of parents and adults with extended hours and special classes. Discover what else South Mountain YMCA has to offer.

Offering a Plethora of Children & Youth Programs

Our child care and after-school programs for children are a point of pride for us. We offer programs geared toward specific age groups or interests. With such a wide variety to choose from, your child is sure to find one that fits their preferences. Explore some of our most requested programs:

  • Daycare: We understand finding quality, affordable child care is next to impossible. Moreover, most parents just don't have the work flexibility to stay at home with children most of the time. That's why we're happy to offer all-day child care for infants through children aged 5 years. We're also pleased to provide before and after-school programs for parents who need to work a little later.
  • Summer Camp: Camp is an excellent way for children to develop confidence in themselves, improve their physical fitness, and make connections with their peers. We organize traditional summer camps, as well as specialty camps. These specialty camps might focus on a sport, art, or theater, and are designed to help participants explore the world around them.
  • Teen Programs: These programs are geared toward the interests of youth in grades 5 through 12. Some of these programs are dedicated to helping teenagers make positive connections with mentors and new friends, while others are focused on skill-building. Among our most popular programs are the Teen Leaders Interact Club and American Red Cross Babysitting Training.
  • Youth Basketball: Kids basketball is one of our most requested programs at South Mountain YMCA. We offer basic basketball clinics for younger children and more advanced courses as they get older. Even kindergarteners can enjoy our youth basketball program!
  • Youth Gymnastics: Maybe basketball isn't in your child's wheelhouse, but they'd love to start gymnastics. These programs are available for toddlers and school-aged children. As our students get older, they can join our competitive team.
  • Performing Arts: From ballet and jazz dance classes to live theatre productions, our youth performing arts classes and shows encourage kids to explore their creativity in a supportive environment.

Promoting Health and Wellness in the Community

Everyone deserves the opportunity to be healthy, and South Mountain YMCA wants to give adults and families those resources. Whether you're interested in swim lessons or group exercise, we have something for you. Our health and wellness programs include the following:

  • Adult Exercise: For our patrons over age 18, we offer professionally-taught Zumba® classes. This form of exercise is famous for its Latin rhythms, simplicity, and results. Zumba classes are offered every Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 PM and cost only $5 to drop in. Plus, group exercise is a great way to make new friends!
  • Family Programs: If you're looking to get your young children started on exercise, these are the programs for you. During these sessions, parents participate alongside their children in music lessons, yoga, and more. Children and parents alike love Tiny Tumblers, as well as the opportunity for open play (registration required).
