Helping Kids Be Successful

ConroyTom Conroy and his family have been Y members since 2011.  “Coach Tom” volunteers his time to lead and mentor a 1st grade team in our Y’s Youth Basketball League, along with Coach Dave Beckman.

Coach Tom tells his Y story best:  “I am very proud to be affiliated with an organization such as the West Essex YMCA for a number of reasons.   Helping kids feel successful and creating a positive experience goes hand in hand with my job as an educator.  It is vital that our kids understand their role in today’s world.  It is more about being a positive citizen and creating an atmosphere of belonging than an environment of competition.”  At the West Essex Y, we couldn’t agree with Coach Tom more!

“As parents and volunteers it’s our responsibility to help kids see the fun in things” Tom says. “If it’s not fun, and if they don't feel like they belong, there is a greater chance of them not continuing with the activities.  That's not the message we want to send.”  Coach Tom certainly knows how to create a fun environment. He is always smiling out on the basketball court, no matter what the score is or how “tough” of a game is being played.

Tom’s sense of humor is contagious. He knows how to bring levity into even the most challenging of situations. Tom’s ability to keep things in perspective is an asset to all of those around him. He sets a great example, and serves as a wonderful role model for our Y kids.

Every child has the chance to flourish at the Y, and you can help.  Our annual support campaign provides the opportunity for scholarships, for families who are in the midst of economic crisis.

The YMCA make strengthening our communities our cause. We help individuals and families everyday become stronger, more connected and secure. Help us make an impact in your community. Give to the Y.
