Outreach to Seniors

Senior citizens are at a higher risk for contracting COVID-19 and as a result, many are experiencing increased social isolation and loneliness. Your support means senior members stay connected to Y staff and to each other through regular outreach, making sure seniors maintain access to critical resources like meals, and staying physically and mentally healthy during isolation. Our branches are supporting our seniors through regular wellness check-ins, newsletters, virtual workouts and Coffee Clubs, and sending comfort cards from families.

“During this time of anxiety, sadness, sickness and transitions, the East Orange Y has been a blessing and they’ve really been looking out for seniors. They supplied and delivered FREE Easter dinners by a local caterer helping a young man’s business. They are also supplying more dinners to some seniors for Mother’s Day! Such a blessing!”

Y Staff Story: My Conversation with Maureen

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my experience I had with one of our senior members.

I consider myself to be someone who is very empathetic and often feels others’ emotions. It’s been an emotional roller coaster reaching out and speaking to our seniors. Some share that they are challenged to find any normalcy, regular exercise or happiness, even though they try. It can be very hard to hear their sadness. I am happy to offer them an ear, conversation or any recommendations for wellness if they feel it would be helpful. All are very appreciative and grateful to have someone to talk to and some even share great stories. But one particular story stands out and our conversation was incredibly inspirational. Her name is Maureen.

Senior Healthy & Fitness Day

100,000 older adults will participate in activities at more than 1,000 locations throughout the U.S. on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 as we celebrate the 27th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day. The common goal for this day: to help keep older Americans healthy and fit. Always held the last Wednesday in May, National Senior Health & Fitness Day is the nation's largest annual health and wellness event for older adults.

National Senior Health & Fitness Day is organized as a public-private partnership by the Mature Market Resource Center, a national information clearinghouse for the older adult market.
