Prevention Measures Summary

  • Limit capacity to 25%.
  • Acrylic barriers installed at Welcome Centers and check-ins.
  • Online membership transactions only.
  • Hand sanitizer placed throughout the building.
  • Members and staff should wash their hands frequently.
  • Facility and equipment thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with hospital grade disinfectant cleaner (before opening and throughout the day).
  • Members will be asked to clean equipment before and after each use.
  • Spacing markers on floors to enable social distancing.
  • Signage installed and staff monitoring all areas with more than one member to enforce social distancing practices.
  • Equipment spaced to maintain appropriate social distance.
  • Seating throughout the facility will be removed/repositioned for social distancing.
  • All people entering the facility, including staff and members, will wash hands with soap and water frequently.
  • All staff will be required to wear face masks.
  • Members are required to wear a face mask at the health screening stations and at all times while in the facility. Masks are optional while participating in outdoor exercise programs.
  • To obtain facility access, employees and members will be screened through a questionnaire and temperature check. After satisfactory completion, member self-scans their Y key tag to obtain Y entry (staff will not handle cards, phone, or other personal belongings).
  • Any individual who displays symptoms of illness during the screening process, or has been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, may not enter the building.


  • Entire facility will be cleaned and disinfected prior to opening.
  • Acrylic barriers installed at Welcome Centers and check-ins.
  • All equipment will be cleaned with hospital-grade disinfectant throughout the day (minimum of every two hours) and after closing.
  • Members will be asked to use provided cleaning supplies to clean equipment before and after each use.
  • Public entry doors and counters, elevator buttons, mobility assist handrails, and stair rails will be cleaned a minimum of every two hours.
  • Employee workspaces cleaned a minimum of every two hours each day.
  • Outside air flow will be increased.

Areas Open With Restrictions

  • Indoor and outdoor cardio and strength areas open by reservation only.
  • Only designated bathrooms will be open.
  • Gymnasium open for group exercise classes or YMCA designated activities.
  • Group Exercise will operate on a space available basis through on-line reservation system.
  • Group Exercise classes and wellness center redesigned for social distancing and cleaned before and after every class. Classes limited to 45 min.
  • All available pool activities offered require online reservation.
  • Locker rooms open with strict social distancing and cleaning policies in place; no lockers available for use, please come dressed for class. Showers available only for those using the pool.
  • All non-bottle water filling drinking fountains will be out of use.
  • Tennis, squash, racquetball, and pickleball are available by reservation only per NJ DOH guidelines.
  • No parents allowed in childcare areas.
  • Furniture repositioned for social distancing.
  • Seating areas significantly reduced to prevent gathering.
  • Non-contact Personal Training will observe social distancing protocols.

People & Activities

  • Staffing limited to “essential staff” (includes social distance monitors throughout facilities).
  • All staff thoroughly trained on COVID-19 transmission prevention and new cleaning protocols prior to working.
  • Staff and members encouraged to self-screen for potential exposure to COVID-19 and for symptoms of the virus prior to traveling to the Y. If exposure and/or symptoms are present, do not come to the Y.
  • All people entering the facility, including staff and members, asked to wash hands with soap and water and/or sanitize hands upon entry and exit.
  • Numbers controlled throughout the building (not to exceed 25% of facility/area capacity).
  • Once admitted, members limited to a 45 min visit.
  • Individuals may only use one piece of equipment at a time.
  • No full court, pickup basketball.
  • Members’ and staff's personal belongings stored only in designated areas only.
  • Members must scan out upon leaving the facility.
  • Children in childcare are physically distant from members and we continue to abide by DCF guidelines.
  • Guests not allowed to use facilities.
  • Anyone unwilling to comply with the Y’s COVID-19 transmission prevention measures or follow our new community-conscious code will be asked to leave the facility immediately.
  • Non-virtual sports, enrichment, social, and outreach programs per NJ DOH guidelines.
  • Virtual classes continue.
