Swim Team

YMCA swim team participants improve individual skills while swimming competitively both at the local and national levels. Coaches focus on proper technique while helping participants improve their endurance, learn teamwork and make friends. 

Competitive swim teams are available at three YMCA branches for swimmers ages 6-18.

West Essex YMCA

The West Essex YMCA Racers Swim Team is a professionally run program with a long-standing tradition of athletic success and personal achievement. The objectives of the program are to develop young athletes to maximize their swimming ability, to develop self-confidence, and to build respect for others. It is designed to motivate and challenge swimmers to reach individual goals while still enjoying the benefits of a team sport. 

Swimmers compete in invitational meets, dual meets, and championship meets sanctioned by USA Swimming and YMCA Swimming.

The Piranhas is West Essex YMCA's swim team for those with intellectual disabilities. The Y provides an inclusive atmosphere for athletes to practice and compete in partnership with the Special Olympics of New Jersey. 

Sussex County YMCA

The Swordfish are the Sussex County Y’s competitive swim teams. Team members will compete in dual meets against other YMCA teams in the league. Team members will be registered with USA Swimming, and have the opportunity to compete in invitationals that include teams from the state of NJ, not just YMCAs. Swimmers who meet qualifying times during the season will be eligible to attend YMCA and USA championship meets. Tryouts required.

Prerequisite: Proficient at swimming the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle in proper technique. Practices concentrate on improving technique, starts, turns, endurance and speed, dryland exercises, and stretching.
