Fall 2 Session runs from November 2nd - December 23rd

The South Mountain YMCA, Maplewood New Jersey, youth performing arts classes and shows are created to encourage curiosity and creativity as well as to develop self-confidence and art appreciation in an inclusive, nurturing and supportive environment.

ADULT/CHILD CLASSES

Giggle & Groove (0 - 2 yrs)
Shake, rattle and roll to the beat with music that gets your toes tapping! Dress in comfortable clothing. Parents with infants in wearable baby carries are welcome to join the fun. Parents/chaperones participation required.

Music & Me (Walking - 2 ½ yrs)
Explore melodies with instruments, stomp around on our Giant Piano Mat and soak up music vocabulary. We sing songs and play instruments in games and activities. Parent/chaperone required to stay.

*Adult/Child classes with an asterisk are classes that can be discounted to $0 if enrolled in a fully paid Adult/Child class. For each fully paid Adult/Child class, members receive 1 class discounted to $0 from those asterisked. "Fully paid" Adult/Child class refers only to those not asterisked. 

DANCE ATTIRE

Our dress code is designed so teachers can see the dancer's body lines, including posture, arms, legs and feet. Dancers get the most out of their classes when they are dressed appropriately. Girls are required to wear a leotard for all classes. Long hair is to be worn in a tight ponytail or bun and secured away from the face. For the safety of all our dancers, no jewelry is worn in class. Leg warmers are optional. T-shirts are to be worn during hip-hop class only. Boys wear shorts or jazz pants and a fitted shirt. No loose-fitting cargo pants or jeans.

YOUTH DANCE CLASSES

NEW! Dance/Gymnastics Combo (4 - 6 yrs)
A perfect way to combine two classes into one! This combo class features a half hour of dance and a half hour of gymnastics. Participants will explore gymnastics skills on the bars, beam, floor and vault in addition to creative movement with dance technique, combinations and fun dance games and activities. No class 11/28.

Bitty Ballerinas (3 - 4 yrs)
Young dancers develop the fundamentals of creative movement, explore free motion and grasp an understanding of dance language. Mini Recital performance is at the end of the session. Attire includes a pink leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers (either leather or canvas).

Ballet I (3 - 4 yrs)
Young dancers develop the fundamentals of creative movement, explore free motion and grasp an understanding of dance language. Mini Recital performance is at the end of the session. Attire includes a pink leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers (either leather or canvas).

Ballet/Tap Combo (4 - 6 yrs)
Dancers move through steps at the barre, floor progressions and center. We introduce and incorporate terminology, musicality, rhythm, and creative movement. Dancers are kept on their toes exploring new vocabulary and establishing dance routines. Mini Recital performance is at the end of the session. This class is 30 minutes of Ballet followed by 30 minutes of Tap.

Musical Theatre Jazz (7 - 10 yrs)
Dance and sing away with Miss Tina & Miss Juliette to your favorite Broadway tunes! This class will feature warm-ups, across the floor routines and combinations taken from actual Broadway choreography.

YOUTH THEATRE CLASSES

Theatre Bugs (3 - 5 yrs)
What is theatre and how does it all work? Through games, warm-ups, exercises, art and various projects, theatre bugs will learn the basics of the stage. Miss Justine brings her wealth of knowledge and extensive background in theatre to our smallest performers. No class 11/28.

Playwriting (3rd - 5th Grade)
Learn the basics of character building and story development with a seasoned playwriting expert. Miss Justine will take students on an adventure from a small idea to a big masterpiece. No class 11/28.

YOUTH THEATRE PRODUCTIONS

JUNIOR THEATRE PRODUCTION: (Grades K-5th)

Be a part of the magic that happens at our Y as we produce our next youth production. At the Y, there is a place in the show for everyone who auditions. Professional costuming, sets, and sound are used to enhance the performance. All skills levels are welcome. No prior experience is necessary.
SHOW DATES:
 December 6th-8th
AUDITION WORKSHOP DATES: September 10th & 12th 5:30-7:30pm at the First Presbyterian and Trinity Church (111 Irvington Avenue, South Orange).
Video auditions may be submitted if you cannot attend the workshop, or to set up a time to potentially meet with the directors, please email Gail at gsprague@metroymcas.orgPlease register prior to attending the audition workshop!
REHEARSALS: Tuesday & Thursday evenings (typically 5:30-7:30 or 6-8pm); Sunday afternoons (2-4pm). **Not all cast members will be called for all rehearsals, amount of rehearsal depends on the size of the role. We are very understanding of other conflicts, please reach out to Gail if you need to discuss potential major conflicts prior to auditions. All cast members are expected to be able to attend Tech Week, which takes place the week prior to the show (December 2nd-5th).

FEE: Members: $200 Community Members: $250 (Financial Assistance available, please email Gail at gsprague@metroymcas.org for more information)
All participants will receive their own script, a show t-shirt and two complimentary tickets to one of the performances as part of the fee.

(Grades 6th-12th)
