A New Year

It’s Never too Late to Give Your Child the Right Start in 2019!

If you’re like most adults, starting a new year means the opportunity to reflect, set new goals, and start fresh.  We look forward to the chance to reset and redefine what is important in our lives, possibly with a new focus and structure.

And adults are not the only ones who can benefit from this annual renewal.  Believe it or not, children can use a restart for the new year too.  Busy schedules filled with extracurricular activities, hours of homework, endless video-game playing and YouTube watching can quickly wear on a child and disrupt well-intentioned bed-time routines, healthy meals and snacks, and other healthy choices.

Even children as young as two years old can benefit from a re-start of sorts in the new year, “Talking with preschoolers at their level about the things they can control is a great way to get them involved in new year goal-setting and behavior improvements,” explains Jessica Malas, ABC Early Childhood Learning Center Director at the Wayne YMCA

Malas suggests some ways to encourage these activities and behaviors, such as:

  • Helping to clean up their room.
  • Saying please and thank you.
  • Helping to set the table (with plastic plates and utensils).
  • Washing hands after using the bathroom.
  • Learning to share with other children.
  • Learning how to get dressed and undressed.

“These activities help to give children structure and act as a guide of sorts for how to behave,” Malas says, “It’s never too early to start teaching a young child how to accomplish these everyday tasks and it gives them a sense of achievement as well.”

Now that the new year is here, let’s make it the best year possible, for all ages!

The ABC Early Childhood Learning Center at the Wayne YMCA helps children with these important life-skills every day.  A licensed child care center for children ages 6 months to kindergarten, the ABC ECLC’s teachers and staff provide a quality early childhood learning experience for all children.  Call Jessica Malas to schedule a tour, 973-595-0100, ext. 247 or email her.
