What Are the Benefits of Sending Kids to YMCA Sports Camp?

More parents than ever before are discovering the many benefits offered by sending their children to summer camp. Not only does summer camp keep kids entertained during their summer vacation, but it also helps them develop lifelong skills and friendships. The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges specializes in providing age-appropriate kid’s activities to allow children to explore their curiosity, creativity, and athleticism. Specifically, YMCA Sports Camp offers the following benefits for campers of all ages:

  • Physical Activity and Wellness – According to the World Health Organization (WHO), children should participate in at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Sports camp promotes physical activity and wellness, so children develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Not only will your child have fun playing sports, but you can rest easy knowing they’re developing strong bones and muscles while reducing their risk of becoming overweight or obese.
  • Improved Athletic Skills – Sports camp gives young athletes the chance to hone their skills and learn new techniques to improve their game. Many of today’s professional athletes developed their love for a specific sport through youth sports camps and training. Giving your child the chance to excel at athletics often leads to happier, healthier children as a result.
  • Fosters Teamwork and Social Skills – Sports teach children many valuable life skills, including teamwork, communication, leadership, work ethic, and an awareness and appreciation for others’ different strengths and weaknesses. Children also develop social skills through sports participation, making new friends, and connecting with others.
  • Improved Self-Esteem and Confidence – Setting goals and accomplishing them does wonders for an individual’s self-esteem and confidence. Leaving home to participate in a sports camp is a goal many children feel empowered by upon completion. Children with high self-esteem tend to go on to accomplish more in life throughout their careers and relationships.

How to Select the YMCA Sports Camp That’s Right for Your Child

The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges has several specialty sports camps available to accommodate young athletes of all skill levels. Give your child the gift of camp and treasured memories to last a lifetime when you choose among the following YMCA Sports Camp programs and more:

NEW! Basketball Camp

We provide intense programming in which campers will further develop basketball skills, learn game strategies, and achieve goals both on and off the court. Each day is spent improving fundamentals, performing interactive drills, building offensive and defensive skills, playing in-house tournaments, and getting in shape. For more information about our new basketball camp, contact Lisa Sheafer, Youth Programs & Family Engagement Director, or download our 2020 Summer Camp Guide.

One of the most popular sports played around the globe, soccer emphasizes teamwork and good sportsmanship. Children registered in soccer camp are encouraged to be active physically, mentally, and socially while developing the skills necessary to be a soccer star on the field of life.

For well over a century, millions of Americans have trusted the swim instructors at their local YMCA for swim lessons and more. Campers will enjoy swimming in our indoor pool or the nearby lake. From beginners to those interested in improving their swim stroke techniques, there’s room for everyone.

Grab some new friends and get moving in our intense dodgeball programming. Dodgeball is a sport that teaches throwing, catching, movement, and agility skills. Not only is dodgeball fun and challenging for our campers, but it’s also a fantastic form of anaerobic exercise promoting hand-eye coordination.

Tennis is not only great aerobic and cardiovascular exercise for our campers, but it also improves hand-eye coordination, agility, and flexibility, as well as gross and fine motor coordination skills. Many parents choose tennis for their children because it’s a no-contact sport that also boosts mental development.

Kickball helps children refine their gross and fine motor skills, as well as their hand-eye coordination, timing, balance, and good sportsmanship skills. Learning how much force is necessary to throw or kick a ball to avoid excessive force is another valuable lesson taught at YMCA Sports Camp.

Bump, set, spike! Kids enjoy making new friends and learning new skills developed through the game of volleyball. Summer camp is an ideal setting to teach kids how to play organized volleyball from an early age, so they’re ready to participate on the school’s team by the time they reach junior high or high school.

Wiffle Ball

Wiffleball provides a suitable introduction to baseball and softball, promoting hand-eye coordination with less competitive pressure than alternatives such as T-ball. A popular backyard staple since the 1950s, Wiffle ball now has tournaments and leagues spanning the nation. Your kids will enjoy learning the basics of Wiffle ball during our YMCA Sports Camp!

Pickleball is a paddle sport suitable for all ages and skill levels. Played indoors or outdoors, pickleball is played like tennis in either singles or doubles using a paddle, plastic ball with holes, and a slightly modified tennis net. Pickleball is a fun way to burn calories and boost mental health, balance, and agility while forming new friendships on and off the court.
